It is well known that the sunset in Syros is one of the most beautiful and captivating in the entire country! Syros offers many different spots to enjoy the sunset, but the one in Apano Meria stands out.

What is Apano Meria, Syros, and what sets it apart from the rest of the island?

When we talk about “Apano Meria” in Syros, we essentially mean the entire northern part of the island. It covers almost half of Syros (45%) and is separated from the rest by an imaginary line connecting Ermoupoli with Ano Syros, Alithini, and Kini. Spatially, it is almost identical to the Special Protection Area (GR4220032) of the NATURA 2000 sections.

The main feature of the area is its rocky and steep hills. These are largely covered by phrygana (sage, thyme, aspalthos, and others). Most of Apano Meria’s coastline includes difficult-to-access and steep beaches. Due to the rugged road network, most of Apano Meria Syros is almost… uncharted for tourists! Apano Meria has escaped the tourist invasion and undoubtedly owes much of its charm to this fact.

Sunset in Apano Meria, Syros: Where to get the best view

Cathedral of Saint George: Located at the top of Ano Syros, it offers breathtaking panoramic views. An ideal spot to enjoy the sunset, with the sun creating unique hues as it descends towards the horizon.

Diosmos Quarry: A marble quarry in the Diosmos area that ceased operations in 1962. A rather rugged and inaccessible spot, ideal for hiking and exploration enthusiasts. The panoramic view of the entire island will more than compensate you. From there, Tinos is visible to the northeast and Gyaros to the northwest.

Diapori, Syros: The northernmost tip of Syros offers everything a sunset needs to be enjoyed: Isolation and tranquility. Access to Diapori is only for experienced hikers and includes a uniquely interesting route.

Kastri and Chalandriani: Last but not least, we left the prehistoric settlement of Kastri and the settlement of Chalandriani on the northeast side of the island. Kastri dates back to the end of the Early Cycladic period II (2800-2300 BC) and includes remnants of buildings and a cemetery with 600 tombs! It is probably the place where Syros was first inhabited.

A 45-minute hike through a rough path leads to the small settlement of Chalandriani, where a prehistoric acropolis has been excavated. Like most hiking routes in Ano Meria, accessing both requires excellent physical condition, experience, and appropriate equipment.

Why does Apano Meria in Syros have the best sunset?

It is a common secret that there are many places in Greece to enjoy the sunset. However, the key is that the place is truly a “secret” and not… “common”! How many times have you witnessed a truly beautiful sunset, but the crowd it attracted made it tiresome? Were you not annoyed by holidaymakers repeatedly asking you to photograph them, ruining the moment? Didn’t the magic vanish due to the noise and commotion? Apano Meria has the best sunset in Syros because it is literally a sanctuary, surrounded by endless blue. A sunset lasts a maximum of 30 minutes. During those moments, it is better to enjoy the spectacle lost in your thoughts rather than fighting to… keep your spot.
